Reviewing Virginia Beach City FC's Successful 2019 Season
NORFOLK, Va. (July 12, 2019) — Virginia Beach City FC rebounded this season, finishing with a 6-1-1 regular season record and qualifying for the NPSL Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship.
That wasn't the organization's only accomplishment this season, as VB City FC successfully made the move to a new venue, orchestrated several shutouts and cemented themselves as one of the best teams in the entire NPSL.
On the Field
Virginia Beach City FC put together one of their best performances of the club's existence. The club scored 16 goals in 2019, the second-highest total in team history. Conversely, VB City FC allowed just five goals in the regular season, the second-least allowed in team history. VB City FC's five goals allowed was the lowest total in the Mid-Atlantic Conference.
Virginia Beach City FC's offense got started early and often in games, scoring nine of the team's 16 goals in the first half. VB City FC scored in the first 12 minutes in five of their eight NPSL matches.
On June 15, Virginia Beach City FC was rated as the fourth-best team in the NPSL, the team's highest ranking in the history of the NPSL Power Rankings. VB City FC finished the season ninth.
Forward Ezana Kahsay dazzled fans with his striking ability this season, scoring seven goals. His seven scores are tied for third place in the entire NPSL Northeast region. Kahsay's seven goals also lead the Mid-Atlantic Conference.
Keeper CJ Coulson put together the best season of his career, finishing with five shutouts and being selected three times for Man of the Match. Coulson allowed only five goals in eight regular season matches.
Midfielder Cesar Gervacio was the heart of the attack all season demanding multiple men marking him whenever he touched the ball. His impact didn't show on the stats sheet, but his presence and technical skills were invaluable to the team.
Christening a New Stadium
Virginia Beach City FC embraced a new home this season, moving to Powhatan Field at Old Dominion University. VB City FC won their first ever match at Powhatan with a 2-0 win over Charlottesville Alliance FC.
Powhatan Field was the host of the NPSL Game of the Week on June 2, as VB City FC defeated FC Frederick 4-0. On that night, Virginia Beach City FC paid tribute to the victims of the tragic shooting at the Virginia Beach Municipal Complex on May 31.
Strengthening Our Relationships
This was also the first year that VB City FC and D.C United played twice in one season further strengthening the already strong partnership formed in early 2018. Virginia Beach City FC ended the two-leg matchup winning and tying one with an aggregate score of 6-2.
Although Virginia Beach City FC didn't reach their ultimate goal of a Championship they finish the season knowing they left a mark on the community they love, Hampton Roads.
