Virginia Beach City FC Wins First Home Match at Powhatan Field vs. Charlottesville Alliance FC
NORFOLK, Va. (May 19, 2019) — Virginia Beach City FC christened their new home arena on Saturday night, knocking off Charlottesville Alliance FC 2-0 to earn their first win of the season.
"We're still not quite playing the soccer that we want to, but we did good attacking inside," said VB City FC head coach Brian Hinkey.
VB City FC is now 1-0 at their new stadium, Old Dominion University's Powhatan Field. Located centrally in the Hampton Roads area, VB City FC fans across the region can more easily access their club.
"You never know what's going to happen when you get to a new stadium, but the new stadium is great," Hinkey said. "It's a beautiful venue and we love being here... To have the crowd we did tonight, with the fans and the tailgating, everything is coming to fruition and I'm really excited about it."
VB City FC's goals came from Jesse Miralrio in the 12th minute and from Ezana Kahsay in the 40th minute. The Virginia Beach City FC defense stymied CVille Alliance FC's forwards, fending off 16 shots and nine corner kicks.
Saturday's win gives VB City FC an early four points in their 2019 NPSL Mid-Atlantic Conference campaign. VB City FC sits atop the table and has another opportunity to add to their lead on Sun., June 2 vs. FC Frederick. But first, VB City FC will host DC United's U-23 team at Powhatan Field at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here.
"Against DC United, we've got to find better shape in the midfield," Hinkey said. "We've got to keep possession and get going in transition... We've got a lot of pace and a lot of exciting players up front, but we're getting a little impatient."
