2022 NPSL Regular Season
July 9, 2022 – Powhatan Field, Norfolk, VA
If there was ever a tie that felt like a loss, this one would be that. Virginia Beach City FC capped the 2022 regular season with a draw at home against bitter rivals Northern Virginia United. VB City FC needed a win to host the semi’s finals at home but alas, the boys were unable to finish the match off. They will now bounce back on Wednesday, July 13th against the same NoVA squad that spoiled the party tonight.
The first half saw both teams looking for the first breakthrough as hard as possible. For a while it looked like Virginia Beach City FC was going to have the best of the chances. In the 12th minute, the home team was awarded a free kick just outside the 18 yard box. It was 6-foot Forward Mikael Ndjoli standing over it and had the shot gone in, it would have been an internet breaker. The shot curled up and over the wall and narrowly missed the upper 90, zipping wide. At the 25 yard mark, a Northern Virginia United attacker, Carter Berg, picked up the ball at the half field line and barreled through the Virginia Beach City FC midfield and unleashing a shot at CJ Coulson who stood firm to perry it way. Mika Ndjoli picked up a pass from Sheriff Secka. He wound up a shot and ripped a ball at NVU keeper Altan Murray who could only punch it away to safety. 29 minutes in, Mikael Ndjoli danced on the ball in front of Northern Virginia defenders and sped off for a break on goal, drawing a foul from a late defender. Sheriff Secka stood over it this time, having at it over the wall but just dipping down and into a cradling Goalkeeper. In the 31st, Virginia Beach City FC were linking up beautifully. They had just finished a 10 pass consecutive sequence before a defender knocked it out for a throw-in on their first contact with the ball. A long throw put in by Puerto Rico international Eli Carr to Albritton, to Idornigie, to Ndjoli, to Idornigie who quick checks to Rutkauskas, back to Carr, to Liam Moore out wide. James Madison University’s Moore swung a cross across field just a little too far for Joel Albritton who tracked it down with a sliding save to keep it in play. The ball found soon-to-be Virginia Military Institute defender Arnold Rutkauskas 26 yards out from goal. Rutkauskas lifted his head and saw his opportunity; the curling shot at goal was collected by Murray. The 19 pass build-up play all came crashing down. Another 16 minutes went buy with not much else to report on headed into half-time.
The second half eventually began and it was NVU putting points on the board first. On the back half of a counterattack, NoVA sent a ball into the box from the right wing. The ball hit a diving Alexander Moody in the head, who was trying to clear the play for Virginia Beach City FC, skips through back post for Carter Berg who tapped it in near post for the lead in the 52nd. But just a few minutes later it was Mikael Ndjoli leveling it for his particular shade of blue. The play began with Liam Moore high pressing for the ball at midfield and forcing the turnover. Moore slotted the pass for Secka down the sideline who took it down to the touch. Secka found his new friend in Mikael Ndjoli in the middle of the box for the game tying goal. This marks Mika’s fourth goal in as many games. The match quieted down from there after as it was actually Northern Virginia who regained the momentum shortly after the tying goal. As the game drew on, Virginia Beach City FC’s ability to keep possession broke down. After a long half of unsuccessful longballs, silly fouls, and incomplete passes, it was looking done for the Trident Boys. One last opportunity for Virginia Beach City FC in stoppage time would have the VB faithful hoping for a last minute stunner. Sheriff Secka brought down a failed clearance and shimmied and shook to find a way out of pressure before finding Ryan Mahon who passed off to Carr; who was swallowed up by a tackle, pushing the ball out to Albritton. Albritton used his footwork to avoid two synchronous takles and barged forward with the ball. Dodging a defender, Albritton carried on before being American Football style tackled; preventing a possible goal. It was a free kick for Virginia Beach City FC in stoppage time, just outside the right 18 yard box. Ndjoli and Albritton stood over the ball. Ndjoli pushed the ball in front of Albritton who cracked a shot into the crowd of players. The rebound was guided out of bounds and that was pretty much it. Virginia Beach City FC drew, but it felt like a loss.
Because Virginia Beach City FC couldn’t get the win, they will be forced to play on the road at the same Northern Virginia United on Wednesday. Regular Season Champions Alexandria Reds will play FC Frederick. The winners of both matches will continue to the Conference Final on Saturday, July 16th.
Player Notes
Prince Idornigie returned to the line-up for the first time since June 24th against Alexandria Reds.
Star Forward Mikael Ndjoli scored at home for two straight weeks. Ndjoli (who joined on June 24th) is now good for 4 goals in as many games with VB City FC.
Coulson, Rutkauskas, Moody, Bremus, Moore, Carr, Albritton, Secka, and Ndjoli all put in 90 minutes of play.

VB City FC News
Virginia Beach City FC returns home for the second week in a row to face off against rivals Northern Virginia United to conclude the 2022 regular season. Virginia Beach City FC has already clinched their place in the post season and has been vying for a home field advantage spot for the last two games. This final third game can clinch home field in the conference semi-final with a flat-out win. Virginia Beach City FC were in position to host for all of four days (sitting in second place) before the Northern Virginia rout over Alexandria Reds 4-1 this past Wednesday. Having played NoVA recently, the home boys know who they’re up against and know NVU will not make it easy for them.
“We are just trying to find those 2v1’s; just trying to find numbers in transition and getting numbers behind the ball quickly. NoVA, they’re good at transitioning and they like to play the direct ball,” analyzed second-year VB City FC man Alexander Moody.
“We’ve been working on finishing our chances so hopefully we do on match day as well,” Mikael Ndjoli said backing up Moody’s statement.
“We’ve been working on it in training so I think we will be able get the job done on Saturday.”
Giving up the late goal was tough in the first meeting between these two sides this year. But this match has a little more significance, and the guys are focused more on our own goals.
“There’s more to play for,” Moody explained. “Not just proving we’re the better team but just making sure we get that homefield advantage.”
Star Forward Mikael Ndjoli recounted the last match against NVU, remembering that: “I think we know it wasn’t our best game when we played them away.”
But he’s optimistic the result will be different this time.
“We’ve worked on a lot of things since that day in training, so I’m confident we’ll get the three points.”
The guys on the roster rely on you, the fans, for your support. Depending on Saturday’s events in our match and Alexandria’s match versus First State FC, this could be the last home match of the year.
“The support fuels us. We get the one goal and we get the momentum of the fans involved, everyone starts cheering and building us up; we get the support to get the second goal,” Moody said trying to motivate the fans to create an amazing atmosphere.
As mentioned before, there’s still potential VB City FC misses their chance to host in the semi’s. But the guys promise if that’s how the cookie crumbles, the guys have everything they need to pick up the pieces.
“Even if things don’t go our way, we’ve been good on the road as well. We won in Alexandria. We drew a team in Delaware when we were looking pretty thin at depth,” gloated Moody.
“Of course we want to play at home. But I think we have a confident team, a confident squad. If we still need to go away, we can still win., “Ndjoli seconded.
Northern Virginia United Notes
Northern Virginia United are entering the same match with the same goals as VB City. Both teams are well alive for the first or second seeds. The best-case scenario for NoVA is that they get a result against us (win or draw) and Alexandria loses to First State FC in Delaware. This would see them finish with 20 or 22 points, Alexandria with 19 and Virginia Beach City FC with 18 points. This result would see Virginia Beach City FC finish third and travel instead of host on the 13th. Virginia Beach City FC’s best-case scenario would be to win at home on Saturday (that would secure at least the 2nd seed) and Alexandria loses in Wilmington (that result would have Virginia Beach City FC finish top of the table.) Alexandria Reds hold their own fate in their hands. A win or a draw would secure them homefield advantage for the semi-finals. We can not wait to see how it all plays out! 2022 NPSL Regular Season
July 2, 2022 – Powhatan Field, Norfolk, VA
Virginia Beach City FC now makes it 7 games unbeaten after their 2-1 victory tonight against FC Frederick. Virginia Beach City FC has already clinched their bid into the 2022 NPSL Mid-Atlantic Conference playoffs and are now vying for home field advantage. The win currently puts them in place to do so. FC Frederick is still in the hunt for the last slot, competing against First State FC. Tonight’s loss pushes their fate into the final week of the regular season.
The first half, overall, was evenly fought as both sides created attacking opportunities. It was only after the water break in the 30th minute that Virginia Beach started to create more threatening chances. FC Frederick started the events in the 11th minute as they found a smooth through ball past the VB defense; one on one with 2019 NPSL Goalkeeper of the Year, Christian “CJ’ Coulson, but the attack was snuffed out by the long time City netminder. In the 37th minute, Puerto Rican International Eli Carr was looking to inspire his side as he took the ball on his own near the edge of the Virginia Beach final third and took it all the way down to the opposing touchline, beating multiple Frederick defenders in a foot race. In the end, Carr ran out of options as the away team got numbers back in time to snuff out the play. In the end of the first half, Virginia Beach City FC dodged a bullet from a trick freekick. Luckily, the shot swerved away from goal. Coulson was then chose to play short out of the back from the goal kick due to the wind. Capitan Preston Bremus then unleashed a fifty-yard-long ball over the top to the new pacey star Forward Mikael Ndjoli who chipped it over the sliding goalie near the top of the 18 yard box and tucked it away for the easy finish from just 6 yards out. This would give Virginia Beach City FC the 1-0 lead headed into the half.
To start the second half, Academy product Arnold Rutkauskas slid a ball through for leading scorer Sheriff Secka down the right flank. Secka met the ball and took it towards goal and had the shot off but the FC Frederick Goalkeeper came up huge with the point blank save. 17 minutes later, it was Sheriff Secka bagging his 6th goal on the season in the 68th minute of play; it was Rutkauskas and Secka linking up yet again. Rutkauskas’ long ball bent around the last defender perfectly to find Secka charging at goal. No mistaking this time, Secka turned hips toward goal and slotted it near post for the 2-0 lead. At the 74th minute mark, Sheriff Secka found himself on the floor in the Frederick box. Despite appeals from his teammates, no call was awarded. Just a minute later, flipping back to Virginia Beach City FC’s penalty box, Zach Johnson was called for a very comparable foul and FC Frederick was awarded a penalty kick. CJ Coulson guessed the right way but the shot just had so much pace behind it that it was already in before Coulson had a chance to reach for it. The score line found itself at 2-1. Eventually, bad memories of last weekend’s match in which VB City FC conceded a late draw, started to arise for as FC Frederick’s desperation to clinch a playoff spot motivated the travelers to threaten a lot more. Virginia Beach City FC found themselves on their heals for much of the final 15 minutes. Ultimately, VB City FC weathered the storm and made it out with the full three points

VB City FC News
Virginia Beach City FC returns home after last weekend’s two game road trek which saw the Blue Boys secure their spot in the Conference Post-Season with their victory over first place Alexandria Reds. That match was scored by team leading goal scorer Sheriff Secka in the 9th minute of a 10 minute stoppage time call by the referees.
“Secka is a proven goal scorer with us. I’m glad to see he is getting back to the form that he ended last season in,” Assistant Coach Jimmy McCabe recognized about his star Forward.
Sheriff Secka in his two seasons with Virginia Beach City FC has been converting goals at an exceptional rate as he has officially scored 11 goals in 13 appearances for the club.
Virginia Beach City FC will now enjoy the final two weeks of the regular season at home as their focus shifts to how they can secure home field advantage against a prospective 3rd or 4th seed; Virginia Beach City FC currently sits in 3rd place which would see them travel should the regular season end today.
“The idea for the rest of the season is to make sure we do our best to secure the six points that are available for us to get. This would put us in the best possible position to hopefully host a playoff match,” explained McCabe.
“We are gonna work on finishing to make sure we are finishing teams off earlier instead of allowing teams get back into the game, especially late,” he as he reiterated the idea it’s a job well done to qualify but the job isn’t done yet.
Having the final two matches at home affords VB City FC players comfortability in many facets of the game.
“The boys definitely enjoy being at home; the two big things being the fans and the second is the ability to be better prepared. We don’t have to drive the three or four hours, sitting in traffic, couped up in a van,” said McCabe as he ran through the differences of being at home and away in this league.
“Being at home allows us to get to the field and get the words in that we need, allows us to be a little more loose and stretched properly for the game. That’s opposed to being away where it’s a mad rush to get ready and through warm-ups, straight into the match and straight back into the vans and back home. It just gives us a more comfortable gameday overall,” he concluded.
As previously mentioned, Frederick is the only club to have collected a full three points towards the standings when they’ve come against us so far this season. But the team and staff aren’t so much focused on the team they’re playing as much as they are on fixing the mistakes that cost them the first showdown.
“I think the idea for this match is that this is a rematch of a game where we let up a really silly goal early in the first few minutes and we gave up another questionable goal at the death of the match. Aside from those two goals, there really wasn’t a whole lot between us. We just didn’t create enough of our own chances to compete in the end,” recounted McCabe.
“I think the big difference this time is going to be that we are going to have a few guys that were not available that previous weekend and a few guys that have come in since then and have been putting up great numbers and great minutes,” the second year Assistant chimed in.
It will indeed be 4th of July weekend, the team is expecting to create a fun and rememberable experience for the fans that will be in attendance.
“We look forward to having the fans come out and support us before the national holiday. It’s a big three day weekend for a lot of people so we are anticipating having people come out Saturday night, barbeque on Sunday, and enjoy the holiday on Monday,” McCabe promoted.
FC Frederick Notes
FC Frederick has won just two other games aside from their previous win against Virginia Beach City FC; against Grove United where they put the newcomers to sleep 4-0 and through a dual against First State FC in a 4-3 final score. FC Frederick is yet to officially secure their own place in the Conference Playoffs and will be looking to do so should they win or draw in Norfolk on Saturday and First State FC lose or draw to Grove at the same hour in Delaware.
]]>June started off with the return home against Grove United after a two-week road stint. Virginia Beach City FC had just won their first match against the same competition the week prior. Virginia Beach City FC ultimately winning the second match at home with the same margin of 2-0.
“I thought we came in with a much better game plan and played with more purpose than we did the previous game against Grove,” said Assistant Coach Jimmy McCabe.
“A lot more guys played in their true positions; had a lot more tactical awareness of what was going on. We were able to manage the match better. Obviously, scoring the goal early in the match made a bigger difference organizationally compared to scoring it at the end of the match,” McCabe concluded.
VB City FC, now with an even 1-1-1 record went on the following week to play at First State FC in Wilmington, Delaware. The team traveled the longest trip of the season with a number of guys who have played rotation rolls this season and with a short bench. The challenge was always going to be tough for that match but the coaching staff was pleased with the performance.
“I thought it was important to come away with the point. I would have much rather have come away with the full three but with the super young roster we traveled with, having them step up and fill in, we are happy with the effort the guys put in that week,” McCabe recalled.
“The end of the story is that we just need to be finding the back of the net more.”
And that they did! Virginia Beach City FC return home to Powhatan Field and, again, played the same competition from the week prior. A whopping five goals were scored by the home team in a match that concluded 5-3 in front of the City faithful.
“Returning home, we had a lot more options player wise. Although we got off to a slow start, I think we easily could have had another five or six more goals in the second half and really put the game away as they started to lose momentum,” recounted by McCabe.
This match was also the debut and long-awaited return of Julian Barrios-Cristales; one of the early success stories of the Virginia Beach City FC Academy program. After departing VB City FC’s Academy, Barrios joined D.C. United’s Academy; the direct youth feeder to Major League Soccer’s original dynasty club. From there, he joined another MLS Academy in Houston Dynamo and spent several seasons there before returning to Richmond. Julian Barrios-Cristales has committed to NCAA powerhouse program Georgetown Hoyas and will begin to play there later on this year.
“It was great to see Julian out there playing with the Men’s Team that he has been training with since he was U-14 or U-15. He’s finally come along and he’s stepped into the middle of the field and played a good solid 30 minutes. Now that he’s with us full-time, I’m excited to see what his addition will do for us going forward the rest of the season,” clamored McCabe; who has long been with the club as a youth coach to have watched Julian’s development up on to this point.
This 5-3 match against First State FC was also the match were second year VB City FC Forward Sheriff Secka went off for a hat-trick, his second, third, and forth goals of the season. Secka would carry this momentum on to the following match scoring the game winner, his fifth goal on the season, at the death of stoppage time to beat first place Alexandria Reds 3-2; clinching a playoff spot for his team.
“Secka is a proven goal scorer with us. I’m glad to see he is getting back to the form that he ended last season in,” McCabe honored.
Sheriff Secka is now on 11 goals all-time with Virginia Beach City FC in 13 matches played.
Minutes before the Friday match with Alexandria Reds, a major signing was finalized for Mikael Ndjoli; an announcement anticipated by the club’s front office for quite some time. Ndjoli is the cousin of Virginia Beach City FC Head Coach Stephane Thys and has played on several notable clubs at the youth and First Team level. Ndjoli, who has only officially been on the VB City FC roster for less than thirty minutes, scored the opener for his side just ten minutes into the match. He later scored another goal in the match to tie it at 2-2; setting the score line for Sheriff Secka to be able to hit the 90th minute danger.
Just two days later, Virginia Beach City FC would be on the road once more in the regular season, this time to play Northern Virginia United. Virginia Beach City FC would come away with just one more point towards the standings thanks to the 1-1 draw.
Virginia Beach City FC will complete the final two regular season matches at home on July 2nd and 9th against FC Frederick and Northern Virginia United respectively before finding out who they will play on their road to the NPSL Mid-Atlantic Championship Match. VB City FC News
On a streak, Virginia Beach City FC answered a draw and a loss in their first two regular season matches of 2022 with two wins. As the team has played more games together, the plan for the roster is finally taking shape and players are beginning to gel well.
Now sitting in third in the standings, Virginia Beach City FC gears up to take on a new competitor in the conference. Despite not knowing much about the opposition, the team will prepare for this one just as they do for any match.
“We are going to go into any game and try to set the tempo in our favor. We can look at what they’ve done statistically and sort of get an idea of what they are good at and bad at,” McCabe said.
“Thanks to the streaming service, we can find and watch some of their games to get an idea of who they are. As always, he hard part is knowing who exactly will be playing in the game.”
Additionally, as the season is reaching the halfway point, rotation plays a factor at this stage. The goal is to keep everyone healthy and that will potentially lead to getting to know some new names in the line-up.
“This coming weekend is going to see a lot of new faces. As guys have made their way through into training, some of those guys are going to get a chance to play and possibly start with the some of the other guys having played a lot of minutes already,” explained McCabe.
“Some of those guys are going to get a rest or get few less minutes to make sure we are getting a good rotation. We are getting to the point in the season where we are going to be having two games in one weekend. We want to preserve those guys for the long stretch while making sure the depth is up for it and everyone’s match fitness is where it’s supposed to be,” he reiterated.
First State FC Notes
First State FC comes into this match struggling at the start of the season with a 0-3-1 record; good for a single point and fifth in the Mid-Atlantic Standings. That one tie is their most recent result with FC Frederick on Tuesday, June 7th. As mentioned before, First State FC was lined up to have played in the NPSL Mid-Atlantic Conference in 2020. However, they never played a match in the conference as the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the season prior to the team having the chance to compete. In 2021, First State FC played in the NPSL Keystone Conference where they finished in fifth place out of eight teams; missing the playoffs by one spot. First State FC is lead by Head Coach Hans van Zutphen.]]>2022 NPSL Regular Season
June 4, 2022 – Powhatan Field, Norfolk, VA
Virginia Beach City FC and Grove United faced off in NPSL Regular Season play for the second week in a row, concluding in the same final score-line from the week prior; 2-0 to Virginia Beach City FC. Virginia Beach City FC returned home for the first time in two weeks as the results are starting to mount up for the team that is now sitting third in the Mid-Atlantic Conference Standings.
Virginia Beach City FC jumped out early to grab the lead as a blown clearance deflected off Ryan Mahon, popping up into the air, and falling perfect for Shariff Secka to tuck it away in the back of the net. Secka, the former team leading goal scorer in the 2021 NPSL Season, had his team up 1-0 just four minutes into the competition. For the next 30 minutes, the game became very back and forth as both teams looked to dictate the outcome of this one. Ten minutes in, VB City FC Goalkeeper Tomas Prizzia collected the ball outside of the box creating a freekick situation for the Grove attack and earning a yellow card. The freekick was well struck but was off the mark, preserving the lead for the home side. In the 21st minute, while counter attacking from a broken down opportunity for Grove, Virginia Beach City FC found themselves working in the opposite final third where Trevor Knight wound up a shot just missing the mark. The match continued between Grove trying to level the score and Virginia Beach City FC trying to further extend their hold on the match. In the 32nd Minute, it was VB City FC doing exactly that. The play started with Joel Albritton finding a pass to Trevor Knight up the left wing, Knight passing it off to Ryan Mahon who found a pass switching sides of the field to John Waller. Waller then increased the tempo of the run to burn down the right wing, sending a rolling ball across the face of goal, and from outside the 18-yard box, Knight tucked away the eventual winner. The home team was now up 2 goals with the home crowd behind them. Much of the match from this point on was primarily a defensive showing from VB City FC as Grove’s desperation to get something back influenced the tempo of the remaining 58 minutes. While staying relatively clean of dirty play, the physicality of the match certainly increased and harder challenges, and quicker; more frequent passing came from Grove. Despite a pair of extra chances of their own, Virginia Beach City FC did well to stuff out many more opportunities from Grove; the match finally ending 2-0.

]]>2022 NPSL Regular Season
May 28, 2022 – City Stadium – Richmond, VA
Virginia Beach City FC and Grove United launched their new rivalry on Saturday May 28th. The match was played at historic City Stadium in Richmond, VA; home of the storied USL League One club Richmond Kickers. Grove and VB City FC both had their chances over the course of the 90 minutes but ultimately it was Virginia Beach City FC who grabbed two late winners for the full three points towards the standings.
“We were excited for the week, playing in Richmond’s City Stadium on a natural grass field; different from playing on turf fields. Walking in, the guys were excited for the atmosphere, a new opponent in Grove, being our closest rival, the boys were pumped especially coming off the loss a week prior,” recounted Virginia Beach City FC Assistant Coach Jimmy McCabe.
Virginia beach City FC was presented with a tactical dual for most of the match as both teams spent much of the first half feeling each other out; trying to decide the best plan for attack.
“I thought we started off a little bit slower than we wanted to. We were trying to figure them out in the beginning; sort of getting the idea of being on grass, a new opponent and not really being sure of their style of play, and building off the issues we’ve been having in not creating enough chances,” McCabe explained.
“But as the game got going, we started creating chances and the confidence started to grow with in the boys, we started possessing the ball a little bit more, little less frantic, and the chances started to come.”
Just two minutes after entering the match as a Forward, normally a Defender, Joshua Condit found the back of the net for his boys in the 86th minute of play; the first lead this roster has enjoyed this season.
“When we brought Josh into the First Team, we knew that primarily he was going to play for us as a Center-back,” Coach McCabe explained.
“But we also knew with him having been a youth academy product, we knew he had the ability to play as a Striker. That day on the bench, he was our biggest target type player and would at least be able to win a couple of headers and force some difficult decisions for their defense. Obviously when he went on, I think his first touch on the ball was the deflection that went ahead and gave us the lead.”
Then, four minutes after the initial goal, Condit went ahead and doubled his tally scoring yet another goal; eventually proving the match winner after a few minutes of stoppage time.
“He played just six minutes and got two goals. It’s just one of those things of him being a youth product and having that little extra bit of trust from the coaching staff.”
Player Notes
Coming on as a sub, Cameron Khorassani made his debut for Virginia Beach City FC three matches into the year.
Though he didn’t enter the match, Tucker Leverone rejoins the club after making his VB City FC debut last season.
Ethan Clark made his debut with the club with a start. Clark is a Midfielder playing for Virginia Wesleyan.
Coulson, Carr, Bremus, Johnson, Waller, Clark, Albritton, and Mahon all put in 90 minutes of play. Bremus and Mahon are both on 270 minutes for the season.
Josh Condit is crowned Man of the Match for scoring not only his first goal of the season in a win but also doubling up and getting his second in one match. This makes two weeks in a row with VB City FC Academy Alumni scoring AND earning Man of the Match honors.

Virginia Beach City FC now enters the week planning to host the same Grove United club the team faced last weekend. This is Virginia Beach City FC’s first return home in two weeks since week one’s draw to Alexandria Reds. Playing the same club twice in two weeks presents the same challenges as any other match; how do we get better from the week before?
“The goal this week is to build on last week. Can we be a little more creative? Can we start the match with the confidence to keep possession? Can we create things a bit earlier? Can we protect ourselves defensively and prevent defensive mistakes,” McCabe philosophized.
With it having been a while since the last time VB City FC have touched home turf, the club is counting on the fans to come and support the guys on to victory. From the youth perspective of the club, there’s some new additions who now can take advantage the unique experience of being part of the VB City FC family.
“Hopefully it will be a big weekend for us,” McCabe exclaimed.
“We just finished tryouts for the youth program so a whole bunch of the kids who are new will be coming out to be part of the VB City FC family and the experience. I know the high school soccer season is ending so they’re all inspired. It’s the week before graduation so I know most everybody is still in town. Hopefully they have Powhatan packed and we can show everybody the crowd we can create.”

VB City FC News
Virginia Beach City FC is seeing a slow start to the season as the club enters the weekend with a 0-1-1 record on the season. Head Coach Stephane Thys’ fiery response to the 90th minute loss last week results in a new vision tactically for the club. Thys knows his team is capable of much more than has been presented thus far in 2022 and anticipates making the appropriate changes to better suit the players on the roster.
“I don’t really want to come back to what happened in the last week,” said Thys, “it was 4 to 4 and a half hours away and very hot. It’s sad because the two goals, we gave them away,” Thys elaborated.
The focus in training going into this week was to sharpen the attack and to capitalize on the opportunities the team creates. Thys hammered away the concept on Monday as the entirety of the offense spent the whole session training on various shooting drills that replicate in-game scenarios.
“We need to be dangerous and not by mistake. This week I want to work on the finishing and the connection between the midfield and the striker,” Thys explained. “If we strike, we do not lose. It was the same against Alexandria. If we were striking, we would have won.”
Coach Thys’ plan to bounce back involves a tactical shift to the lineup.
“I already have a plan. Maybe we come out with something new this week. We will see,” he hinted.
With the trip to Richmond being the shortest trip for the team this season, the club hopes to see some blue in the crowd for the match in Richmond.
“We need the fans to come support. Over there [Frederick], there were no fans [VB City Supporters] and the players like to play when the fans are here. So you know, when you feel your city has your back, the players will play better.”
Lastly, Thys wanted to close the book on the stunning loss from the past week by vowing the team will not disappoint again.
“We will not disappoint you anymore. We can not. We are sorry for last week. It will not happen anymore.”
Grove Soccer United Notes
Grove is a first-year team in the NPSL and plays at the infamous City Stadium in Richmond, Virginia, the home of USL League One side Richmond Kickers. Grove is coming off a tough loss against co-newcomers Alexandria Reds 3-0. Grove Soccer United was founded by Justin Grove who is a former midfielder for the Richmond Kickers. He also previously had playing experiences in France, South Africa, and locally with former NPSL Mid-Atlantic side Charlottesville Alliance. Grove is also the new home for longtime Virginia Beach City FC Goalkeeper/Forward Sharief Stancil.

May 21, 2022 – St. John’s Catholic Prep School – Buckeystown, MD
Virginia Beach City FC and FC Frederick renewed their rivalry on Saturday May 22. The match was played through toasty field conditions with temperatures reaching the upper 90’s, seeing a hydration break in each half. Both teams had their chances over the course of the 90 minutes but ultimately it was Frederick who earned the stoppage time winner late in the match. The highlight for Virginia Beach City FC, however, was the first goal of the Regular Season coming from VB City FC Academy product Ryan Mahon. The team is hoping this goal will trigger momentum going into the rest of the season.
The match which was originally scheduled to be played at 6:30 pm was moved to 2:30 due to a scheduling conflict on the venues part. This saw the guys line up at a time of day when Buckeystown, Maryland was observing peak temperatures during that day. The match was started on time and very quickly FC Frederick’s Short jumped his team out to an early lead slipping the ball in the net at the 3-minute mark. Virginia Beach City FC looked to answer back a few minutes later, combining well in the final third. Virginia Beach City FC newcomer Kyle Usonis took the shot but rocketed just wide. FC Frederick continued to threaten early with a corner kick being served far post but the header narrowly missing the mark. In the 22nd minute, Virginia Beach City FC had an opportunity on goal after being fouled at the top of the box. Wingback Alexander Moody took the freekick, but his well hit shot rocketed over the crossbar as well. Offside was often called in this match as both teams were itching at their opponent’s goal. Usonis was slipped a beautiful chance in on goal but was deemed just a step ahead of the defender. Late into the first, Usonis’ debut continued with him knocking on the door. Moody found Usonis in the box whose subsequent shot was deflected and cleaned up by Frederick’s defense. The first half, however, did not finish without Frederick attempting to extend their lead. The home team was pressing the VB City FC backline late but 2nd year defender Zach Johnson stood in the way of that shot and cleared the ball out of danger.
After the half-time break, Virginia Beach City FC was playing inspired to get back in this match. Veteran Jesse Miralrio took the ball on his own and weaved through defenders pressing the goal. Miralrio looked to get the shot of or find a pass but Frederick’s defense closed down and dispossessed the attack. Just minutes later Virginia Beach City FC sees a break through as Ryan Mahon wound up a shot from 30 yards out and into the back of the net. His shot stayed low all the way and crept under the goalkeepers attempt to block the shot. Mahon’s goal tied the match while earning the first goal for Virginia Beach City FC in 2022, and the first VB City FC Academy Alumni to score for the First Team in the history of the club. After this goal, the match leveled out with no major notes until the final ten minutes of the match. Both teams took note of the dwindling time left in the match and played hard for the win. In the 82nd minute, FC Frederick slipped a ball behind Virginia Beach City FC’s defense creating a breakaway situation. The Frederick player took just too heavy of a touch and VB City FC Goalkeeper Tomi Prizzia jumped on the ball to call the danger quits. As the clock hit 90, it seemed like it would be Virginia Beach City FC who could potentially win if not a tie. Onesime Ngoie played Ryan Mahon through a crowd who copllected the ball one on one with the last defender. The FC Frederick player held up well, forcing Mahon onto his left foot where Mahon blasted a shot just wide and high of the mark, missing the goal to the crowds relief. Then, late in stoppage time, Virginia Beach City FC had the Frederick 18 yard box surrounded. A shot rattled off into the crowd was deflected creating a 50-50 situation. 2nd year Shariff Secka rushed the box getting to the ball first. Secka was kicked and he fell to the ground while Frederick cleared the ball out of danger. Despite shouts from the Virginia Beach City FC side, there was no penalty called. FC Frederick’s Norris was already on the other end with VB City FC newcomer Liam Moore tracking next to him full speed. Just as Moore took a step to block, the shot was off and zipping just under Prizzia’s arms. FC Frederick takes the lead as the whistle blows for the final time. A small shoving match ensued and cleared up by teammates of both sides. Another story in the books for the longest standing rivalry in the NPSL Mid-Atlantic Conference has been written. The teams will meet again in Norfolk on June 2nd.

VB City FC News
Virginia Beach City FC is coming off an opening weekend draw against Conference newcomers Alexandria Reds. They will now turn their attention to long time Conference rivals FC Frederick. FC Frederick and Virginia Beach City FC are the two longest tenured teams in the NPSL Mid-Atlantic Conference, Virginia Beach City FC being the oldest having been competing since 2014. As mentioned in last week’s preview, VB City FC returns in 2022 retooled with a new European philosophy, leadership with veteran experience, and an injection of youth. The new squad will now travel together, building better chemistry on the road trip as players begin to get to know each other.
“I thought it was a good first showing with a mix of veteran players and youth. It looked like for most of the game we were going to get chances and come away with the three points. But, just in the final third, we couldn’t get things done. With the new guys and the old guys, they still have to learn each other’s tendencies and gel them together, and put the ball away when we need to put it away,” said Virginia Beach City FC Assistant Coach Jimmy McCabe.
“We are working a lot in training on build-up and finishing play when we counter or finding the right moments to take a risk. This is instead of taking a risk every time and losing the ball.”
Though the season is underway, the team is still being built every night at training. Virginia Beach City FC has over thirty players attending training; some with hopes of seeing minutes this season and others with the intention to staple their name on the bulletin board for future seasons.
“Most of the extra guys coming out are guys that are alumni of the youth program, friends of alumni of the youth program, or from a local college. They know they might not be ready to seriously play with us just yet but they want to in the future,” McCabe stated. “This just makes our sessions a little more intense.”
McCabe closed the interview with stating the players and staff appreciated the turn out from the fans on Saturday.
“We hope to see it grow. We want to pack Powhatan and have all the Academy and youth kids watching the First Team and understand that it could be them one day. They can put on the First Team jersey and represent the club, their city, and the area.”
FC Frederick Notes
FC Frederick is entering 2022 having been the only team to finish worse than Virginia Beach City FC in 2021 in the standings. Frederick’s 2-7-1 record was good enough for the wooden spoon, the 2-6-2 VB City FC narrowly missing the "honor" by one extra tie. Frederick will be led by new Head Coach Rob Ryerson. Ryerson has a ton of soccer experience having been a longtime collegiate coach and US Soccer Scout.
Per the club’s website, ” I look forward to working with FC Frederick to provide another opportunity for players to grow, learn and competitively compete on the field as the NPSL season begins,“ Ryerson said.

May 14, 2022 - Powhatan Field - Norfolk, VA
Virginia Beach City FC and Alexandria Reds played to a 0-0 draw at Powhatan Field Saturday night in the two’s first ever meeting. The match saw several VB City FC Academy Alumni log minutes for the First Team, a sign of success in the club’s commitment to youth development within it’s ranks. The match was hot and cool for much of the match as there were several fouls and players cramping through out the contest, particularly in the second half.
The match began as a very back and forth contest as both teams were trying to feel out the opponent; both teams going end to end and taking several shots at the keeper early and often. In the earliest minutes, it seemed Alexandria was controlling the majority of possession but by the 20th minute Virginia Beach City FC clearly had the majority of the opportunities. The trend would generally last through out the first half with Virginia Beach City FC taking control of the match at home, most of possession and chances were taken by the boys in blue.
However, in the second half Alexandria made their halftime adjustments and began to punch back, winning the majority of possession in the first 15 minutes. The last 10 minutes of the match once again shifted to a back and forth dual as time was beginning to run out and each side was after the full three points in the standings. The game was likely saved by Preston Bremus as a 90th minute break away counter attack had Alexandria in numbers rushing the Virginia Beach City FC goal. Bremus stayed calm, stuck his foot in and won the ball back for his team and also Man of the Match Honors for himself. Virginia Beach City FC returned the favor with three chances at the death of the match. As the before mentioned cramping set in, the second half saw the two teams observe nearly 8 minutes of stoppage time which allowed Virginia Beach City FC to threaten at the death with three dangerous chances. To no avail, the excitement of the back and forth final 20 minutes of the match ended in a draw.
