Virginia Beach City FC Falls 2-1 to Division-Leading Northern Virginia United

June 30, 2018

LEESBURG, Va. (June 30, 2018) — Sebastian Refi's goal in the fourth minute wasn't enough to push Virginia Beach City FC to victory on Friday night, as Northern Virginia United scored two second half goals to win 2-1 and win their sixth match of the season.

The loss keeps Virginia Beach City FC at eight points for the season, two spots outside of a tie for third place between Charlottesville Alliance FC and FC Frederick. Only the top three teams from the Mid-Atlantic Division make the NPSL playoffs.

"We played well tonight," said VB City FC head coach Brian Hinkey. "We defended well and played with great spirit. We created good chances and we were the better team. We will look forward to playing them again."

Refi's chip-in goal in the fourth minute was the exact start Virginia Beach City FC needed. VB City FC continued to create chances in the first half but failed to add onto their lead and held a 1-0 advantage entering the second half.

Northern Virginia United turned the tide at the beginning of the second half, nearly scoring on a counterattack. NVU broke through in the 68th minute, as Colin Verfurth headed home a free kick to set the score at 1-1. Northern Virginia took the lead in the 83rd minute, thanks to another free kick headed in by Sam Golan.

The defeat drops Virginia Beach City FC to 2-4-2 on the season.

"Overall, it’s been a tough season and we haven’t been getting the results we deserve, but we will fight to the end of the season and do our best," Hinkey said.

Virginia Beach City FC has a chance to jump the table and make the playoffs, but likely needs to win their last two matches. VB City FC will host Legacy 76 this Sunday, July 1 in a short turnaround. Legacy 76 is last in the Mid-Atlantic Division and has struggled mightily all season long.

VB City FC will finish the regular season hosting Northern Virginia United. If VB City FC can turn things around and pull out two straight wins, they might just find themselves in the NSPL playoffs. Tickets to both the Legacy 76 and Northern Virginia United matches can be bought here.
