NORFOLK, Va. (June 25, 2019) — Virginia Beach City FC is on the brink of winning the NPSL's Mid-Atlantic division, but the club needs to take care of business first. They have three matches remaining, including a June 29 meeting vs. Northern Virginia at Powhatan Field.
No Room for Error
Virginia Beach City FC has put together a fine season thus far, but the club is locked in a tight race for the Mid-Atlantic division with FC Baltimore. As of June 25, Virginia Beach City FC holds a three-point advantage, but FC Baltimore has four matches remaining, while VB City FC has just three. If there is a tie at the top between the two teams, FC Baltimore would win the division due to a head-to-head tiebreaker.
VB City FC is coming off a critical win over FC Frederick on June 22, knocking off FCF 2-1 for the club's fifth win of the season. Ezana Kahsay scored the game-winning goal, giving him a team-high seven scores.
On the Outside Looking In
Northern Virginia United entered the season as one of the favorites for the Mid-Atlantic division, but has not lived up to that billing. Northern VA United sits in third with nine points, seven behind Virginia Beach City FC. Since falling to VB City FC earlier this season, Northern VA United has won just one of their three matches.
However, all is not lost for Northern Virginia United. Now that the top four teams in the division will be playing two extra matches, Northern VA United still has an outside chance to take the top spot. They'll need to win on Saturday to stay alive.
Key Matchup
VB City FC's midfield vs. Northern VA United's midfield — In Virginia Beach City FC's only loss, poor midfield play resulted in keeper CJ Coulson being peppered with shots and allowing a season-high three goals. When VB City FC gets strong midfield play, it generates scoring opportunities for their explosive forwards and makes scoring difficult for their opponent. Cesar Gervacio will need to lead the group of midfielders and keep things on an even keel.
