Virginia Beach City FC Builds Momentum With 5-2 Friendly Win Over DC United
WASHINGTON, DC (June 27, 2019) — VB City FC's explosive offense returned to the pitch on Wednesday, leaving DC United's U-23 team in the dust with a 5-2 win in the team's final friendly of the season.
Five different players scored each of VB City FC's five goals, as head coach Brian Hinkey emptied the bench to preserve core rotation players and give some of the reserves needed experience. Regulars Preston Bremus (19th minute), Robby Dambrot (43rd minute), Ezana Kahsay (74th minute) and Tye Stallins (79th minute) all tacked on goals while Kalique Lawrence scored his second goal of the year in the 46th minute.
VB City FC tested out three different keepers vs. DC United, playing DuVaun Smith, Sharief Stancil and Griffin Hemmindinger. It was the first action of the season for Stancil and Hemmindinger, while Smith saw the field as the primary backup to starter CJ Coulson. Both Stancil and Hemmindinger allowed a goal each while Smith pitched a shutout.
While Wednesday's match meant nothing in terms of the NPSL Mid-Atlantic division standings, it was an opportunity for Virginia Beach City FC to gauge themselves vs. some of the nation's best players. It was yet another installment in the extensive partnership between VBC and DC United, who began working together in 2018.
Virginia Beach City FC returns to NPSL action on Sat., June 29 at 7 p.m. in a critical home match vs. Northern Virginia United. VBC is in first place in the Mid-Atlantic division, but needs to win out in order to hold onto the top spot.
