Virginia Beach City FC Draws With DC United's U-23 Squad in Latest Friendly
NORFOLK, Va. (May 23, 2019) — In the third friendly between Virginia Beach City FC and DC United, the two clubs played to an exciting 1-1 draw.
"Having DC United and Coach (Nate) Kish come down, they're a great side and we knew it was going to be a great match. So 1-1, I think it's a pretty fair assessment and represents quality play," said VB City FC head coach Brian Hinkey.
AJ Wadda scored his first goal in his first appearance for Virginia Beach City FC, benefiting from an assist from VB City FC veteran Preston Bremus. Wadda's goal came in the eighth minute.
"He's a very dynamic player," Hinkey said of Wadda. "He's got a ton of pace and he's very skillful. I think he's going to be a bright spot for us moving forward."
Wednesday's draw was the second-straight in the series, and the two clubs will meet again in Washington DC on June 26.
Though the match doesn't count towards VB City FC's NPSL campaign, it did give Hinkey an opportunity to give other players a chance to prove themselves vs. an elite-level team.
"Overall, I thought it was a good match for both teams and a good test for both teams," Hinkey said. "I'm pleased with the result and I got to see a lot from our group. I got to see some players I haven't seen a lot of, so it gave me an opportunity to see them and figure out what we're going to do with them down the stretch."
Virginia Beach City FC resumes their normal schedule on June 2 vs. FC Frederick. VBC currently sits atop the Mid-Atlantic Conference Division with four points and has a chance to build on that lead. Be sure to buy tickets to NPSL's National Game of the Week at Powhatan Field HERE.
