Virginia Beach City FC Draw 1-1 on the Road in NPSL Season-Opener
WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA (May 13, 2017) – Virginia Beach City FC traveled to Williamsburg, Virginia to face Legacy 76 Saturday evening at Wanner Stadium in each of their NPSL’s season-opener, and came away with a 1-1 draw.
The 757 rivalry, which just separates the two teams 60 miles apart, opened as a physical affair that saw a number of hard fouls throughout the first half hour of the match.
Amidst the physical play, both teams’ goalkeepers kept their respective sides in the match for the entirety of the first half, both making a handful of quality saves. None bigger than in the 39th minute, where Virginia Beach goalkeeper Zmuda denied Legacy’s Poelker of Longwood University a chip shot that forced Zmuda into leaping save tipped out for a corner.
The game would go to halftime scoreless.
Legacy would make two changes at the half bringing in fresh legs, as it was Legacy’s second game of the week after falling to the Carolina Dynamo in the U.S. Open Cup.
Three minutes into the second half, Virginia Beach would strike first with Jarom Farnsworth opening the scoring with a goal unassisted in the 47th minute to put VBC up 1-0.
In the 83rd minute, Legacy would find the equalizer they were searching for as an active Poelkens would find halftime substitute Wolons who buried his shot back post to knot the game at one-apiece.
In stoppage-time, VBC would earn one last set piece opportunity to steal all three points on the road, but a free kick from 20+ yards out would not trouble the Legacy goalkeeper.
Virginia Beach City FC returns to the pitch for a second straight road match on May 26 at 6 p.m. ET versus Fredericksburg FC.
