Virginia Beach City FC (2-1-1, 7 pts.) 2 vs. 0 Grove United (0-4-0, 0 pts.)

2022 NPSL Regular Season

June 4, 2022 – Powhatan Field, Norfolk, VA

Virginia Beach City FC and Grove United faced off in NPSL Regular Season play for the second week in a row, concluding in the same final score-line from the week prior; 2-0 to Virginia Beach City FC. Virginia Beach City FC returned home for the first time in two weeks as the results are starting to mount up for the team that is now sitting third in the Mid-Atlantic Conference Standings.

Virginia Beach City FC jumped out early to grab the lead as a blown clearance deflected off Ryan Mahon, popping up into the air, and falling perfect for Shariff Secka to tuck it away in the back of the net. Secka, the former team leading goal scorer in the 2021 NPSL Season, had his team up 1-0 just four minutes into the competition. For the next 30 minutes, the game became very back and forth as both teams looked to dictate the outcome of this one. Ten minutes in, VB City FC Goalkeeper Tomas Prizzia collected the ball outside of the box creating a freekick situation for the Grove attack and earning a yellow card. The freekick was well struck but was off the mark, preserving the lead for the home side. In the 21st minute, while counter attacking from a broken down opportunity for Grove, Virginia Beach City FC found themselves working in the opposite final third where Trevor Knight wound up a shot just missing the mark. The match continued between Grove trying to level the score and Virginia Beach City FC trying to further extend their hold on the match. In the 32nd Minute, it was VB City FC doing exactly that. The play started with Joel Albritton finding a pass to Trevor Knight up the left wing, Knight passing it off to Ryan Mahon who found a pass switching sides of the field to John Waller. Waller then increased the tempo of the run to burn down the right wing, sending a rolling ball across the face of goal, and from outside the 18-yard box, Knight tucked away the eventual winner. The home team was now up 2 goals with the home crowd behind them. Much of the match from this point on was primarily a defensive showing from VB City FC as Grove’s desperation to get something back influenced the tempo of the remaining 58 minutes. While staying relatively clean of dirty play, the physicality of the match certainly increased and harder challenges, and quicker; more frequent passing came from Grove. Despite a pair of extra chances of their own, Virginia Beach City FC did well to stuff out many more opportunities from Grove; the match finally ending 2-0.
