Know Your Opponent: Northern Virginia United | 7/7 | VB City FC
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (July 3, 2018) — Virginia Beach City FC hosts Northern Virginia United this Saturday, July 7 at 7 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. Saturday’s match will be VB City FC’s final match of the season, so be sure to buy your tickets early.
Fighting for pride
VB City FC is playing for pride and revenge this Saturday, after losing to Northern Virginia United just last weekend by a score of 2-1. Virginia Beach City FC is coming off their first victory since June 1, thanks to a 3-0 drubbing of Legacy 76. Unfortunately, because Charlottesville Alliance FC and FC Frederick played to a draw on Monday night, VB City FC can no longer in contention for this year’s NPSL playoffs. A win for VB City FC would ruin NVU's chance for a first round bye assuming FC Baltimore tie or win their game this Friday.
Coasting to the Playoffs
Northern Virginia United has clinched a spot in the NPSL playoffs. NVU is in a tie for first in the Mid-Atlantic Division with FC Baltimore, and NVU owns the tiebreaker over FCB due to a 3-1 goal differential. Northern Virginia United has won their last two matches, defeating Legacy 76 4-0 on June 27 and VBC 2-1 on June 29. NVU will be looking for a win to assure a first round playoff bye.
VB City FC’s midfield vs. NVU’s midfield — Virginia Beach City FC’s backline has been put under tremendous pressure in several of VB City FC’s matches this season, often due to turnovers made in the midfield. During VB City FC’s stretch of four goals in five games, VB City FC’s midfield was unable to generate consistent scoring opportunities for VB City FC’s forwards.
VB City FC has a chance to end their season on a two-match win streak, but the midfielders need to maintain possession and avoid costly mistakes. If the midfield plays to their potential, VB City FC could pull off the upset on Saturday night.
