Virginia Beach City FC End Regular Season Undefeated, Now Shift to Playoffs
VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA (June 10. 2017) - In what was a dominating performance at VB Sportsplex, Virginia Beach City FC capped off an undefeated regular season with a 2-0 win over FC Frederick Sunday night, helping to lock in a potential spot in the 2018 US Open Cup.
The victory also solidified Virginia Beach City FC as the first seed in the Mid-Atlantic divisional NPSL playoffs which begin Wednesday night at VB Sportsplex.
“I’m proud of our team tonight,” Head Coach Brian Hinkey said, “To go undefeated in regular season play is not an easy thing to do.
Having outshot FC Frederick 12-4 throughout the entirety of the match, Virginia Beach City FC started their pressuring of Frederick early.
Their persistence paid off in the 18th minute with Virginia Beach City FC striking first via a Farnsworth finish sent through from Brooks for the goal to take 1-0 lead.
Stancil, Virginia Beach City FC goalkeeper was making his third start of the year and kept his clean sheet streak to start a career alive. He made some big-time saves throughout the duration of the match doing his best to not unnerve the home crowd and keep the visitors off the board.
In the 2nd half most of the ball was in Virginia Beach half as they sought to find that insurance goal.
“We played with a lot of commitment, good composure, and a positive mentality.”
Frederick didn’t provide much resistance in terms of possession, and chances created for Virginia Beach City FC which led to the second goal in the 62nd minute. Prince struck a screamer from just the top of the 18 to double Virginia Beach City FC’s lead and really give them some breathing room. Prince’s goal was assisted by Pace.
Virginia Beach City FC played the rest of the match out and captured for the full three points.
All eyes shift to the NPSL playoffs as Virginia Beach City FC looks to win multiple matches in the regional stages to advance to the nationals.
“We have a quick turnaround playing on Wednesday, and while we feel good about what we’ve accomplished so far, we will remain focused the next two days to put in another great team effort on Wednesday.”Hinkey said.
