Virginia Beach City FC (0-0-1, 1 pt.) 0 vs. 0 Alexandria Reds (0-0-1, 1 pt.)
2022 NPSL Regular Season
May 14, 2022 - Powhatan Field - Norfolk, VA
Virginia Beach City FC and Alexandria Reds played to a 0-0 draw at Powhatan Field Saturday night in the two’s first ever meeting. The match saw several VB City FC Academy Alumni log minutes for the First Team, a sign of success in the club’s commitment to youth development within it’s ranks. The match was hot and cool for much of the match as there were several fouls and players cramping through out the contest, particularly in the second half.
The match began as a very back and forth contest as both teams were trying to feel out the opponent; both teams going end to end and taking several shots at the keeper early and often. In the earliest minutes, it seemed Alexandria was controlling the majority of possession but by the 20th minute Virginia Beach City FC clearly had the majority of the opportunities. The trend would generally last through out the first half with Virginia Beach City FC taking control of the match at home, most of possession and chances were taken by the boys in blue.
However, in the second half Alexandria made their halftime adjustments and began to punch back, winning the majority of possession in the first 15 minutes. The last 10 minutes of the match once again shifted to a back and forth dual as time was beginning to run out and each side was after the full three points in the standings. The game was likely saved by Preston Bremus as a 90th minute break away counter attack had Alexandria in numbers rushing the Virginia Beach City FC goal. Bremus stayed calm, stuck his foot in and won the ball back for his team and also Man of the Match Honors for himself. Virginia Beach City FC returned the favor with three chances at the death of the match. As the before mentioned cramping set in, the second half saw the two teams observe nearly 8 minutes of stoppage time which allowed Virginia Beach City FC to threaten at the death with three dangerous chances. To no avail, the excitement of the back and forth final 20 minutes of the match ended in a draw.
Academy products Joel Albritton, Ryan Mahon, Josh Condit, and Alex Berry all logged minutes with the First Team, joining only Dom Hankle in the club honor.
Long time Virginia Beach City FC Defender Tyler Cyrus made his return to the club having not been rostered in 2021.
Coulson, Carr, Bremus, Moody, Albritton, Secka, and Mahon all put in 90 minutes of play.
Former NPSL Golden Glove winner Coulson earns first clean sheet of the year.
